Normally, Obsidian is black but other minerals or properties in the lava can cause coloration. A very common colored obsidian is a brick red variety called "Mahogany Obsidian". Gold and silver "sheen" obsidian are relatively uncommon. Gold sheen is caused by gas bubbles aligned along layers of lava
